A couple of weeks ago Jamie Anderson invited about 10 girls (skiers and snowboarders) to shoot and ride the private park at her home mountain Sierra at Tahoe. Similar to last year, Jamie wanted the shoot to be fun, progressive and laidback, witch is perfect after a long and intense season. The park had three jumps in a line, a hip, variety of boxes, a pole and a creative rail feature at the bottom. Other Roxy riders there was Aimee Fuller and Erin Comstock. We had all kinds of different weather, everything from sun and slushy conditions to snow blizzard and powder. One of the powderdays we decided to switch equipment, so that the skiers went snowboarding and the snowboaders went skiing. Me and Aimee tried a rail and felt pretty gnarly. Jamie was a great host and rented a big house at the lake for all the riders to stay at. In the evenings we laid on the dock, played games, edited, shot photos and played music. Here are some pictures from the fun week...
The Roxy Chicken Jam, in Mammoth always inspires good times and these two episodes from One Life is all about that! ...we arrived in Mammoth just in time for my cold to kick in, full force. The first days I decided to stay inside to try to get my body healing, using all kinds of herbs, getting acupuncture treatments and sleeping a lot. In the meantime it was absolutely dumping outside, something that meant waist deep powder riding for fellow One Lifers, Sarka Pancochova and Chanelle Sladics. Thursday night it was time for our good friend and singer/songwriter Kellen Malloy to perform at Roxy and One Life's benefit concert. We are doing our best to raise funds towards eco education, and organic food fundraisers. He played some amazing sets and we sold wristbands from Keep-A-Breast. A guest appearance from Eddie Wall was a perfect end to the fun night at Hyde! The next days several practices got cancelled due to the heavy snowfalls, and while the girls shredded fresh powder, I was a good girl and stayed inside to heal my sore throat. Saturday came up fast and it was time for the contest to happen. The only problem was the 100 mph wind gusts that made it very challenging for anyone or anything to operate. Most of the lifts were closed, the rails were covered in snow and the jumps were shut down, so the organizers at Roxy decided to get creative. With a go-pro contest including prizes for "best team", "best trick" and "best pranks" the girls took on the challenge with great enthusiasm. For me, the goal was to make my way up to the mountain/ cafeteria area, so I could watch the "Roxy Powder Jam" go down! Face shots, tied-together shoe lazes, zip-tied boards, bathroom scares and the pranking of Todd Richards on live webcast, were just some ingredients from this very creative day! Check out our Chicken Jammin' Part One and Two to find out more of what went down..."

The famous and sprightly ‘Djette' from the Ritz, and chief editor of Flavor magazine, Estelle Surbranche, will bid a temporary farewell to her Parisian nights, for the chance to also mix at the Roxy Jam.
The evening will continue in the company of Miss Kittin who will invigorate us with her crescendo tracks This French ‘Djette' has in a very short time, become a muse of the underground scene and a representative of style. Her eclectic musical tastes are reflected in the high-pitched pop singing style she puts to some of the more techno nuanced tracks.

Always on the lookout on encouraging better representation of girls in so-called male dominated areas, you can imagine how delighted we were to hear about the Next Girl DJ contest that Roxy set up in cooperation with JBL. After a bunch of application rounds, live sets and a massive online voting, Sam Red from the UK was chosen by the judges and the public vote to be next Girl DJ. We caught up with her
You
were announced winner of the JBL/Roxy Next Girl DJ comp last week. How
does that feel?
Amazing!! I am still
buzzing from it all. The whole contest has been a complete roller
coaster ride – but what a ride! To sum it up in three words:
nerve-wracking, exciting, exhilarating
Were you surprised
you won?
More than surprised, I really
didn’t expect to get through to the semi-final, let alone to win the
whole competition. I just hoped I wouldn’t come last. As the competition
progressed I found myself becoming quite competitive and wanting to
win, although I really never expected too. I nearly fell off my chair at
work when JBL called to tell me!! It really has been an amazing
experience and such a great opportunity.
The
semi finals was a live set, right? How did that go?
Oh my God I was so nervous, probably the most nervous out of
all the girls. The other contestants were all great and very supportive
and we have actually all stayed in touch. I only had 20 minutes to try
and impress the judges – and was up against some really tough
competition! I felt I had done the best I could have done on the night,
and amazingly for me the judges thought so too.
Did you
already think you could win then?
Not at
all!
What do you think gave you the advantage over the
other girls?
I think we all had our own
individual styles and it was down to the judges to decide.
What makes your style special?
I
just love electronic music, and play what I feel is right for that
moment. I’ve spent many years on the other side of the decks, and try to
imagine when I’m playing what I would want to hear if I was on the
dance floor.
What have you been up to since you got the
great news, lot’s of partying?
I went out
celebrating with my friends on Friday and there was definitely lots of
partying. I think my friends were just as excited as me and were so
supportive all through the competition; I really couldn’t have done it
without them.
How did you get to enter the JBL/Roxy Next
Girl DJ contest in the first place?
A
friend suggested that I entered and I actually thought it would be a
good reason to do a new mix at the same time!
