Sally Fitzgibbons Claims Inaugural Australian Open Of Surfing Title!

SallyFitzgibbonsAOS12Dunbar-0679

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) defeated Sofia Mulanovich (PER) in the final of the ASP 6-Star rated Australian Open Of Surfing, both surfers posted decent scores, but Fitzgibbons timed her turns to perfection to take out the event and claim the USD$8,000 winners cheque. Fitzgibbons has been in fantastic form all event, being rewarded by the judges for her ability to link turns together with her trademark smooth style. This week at the Australian Open Of Surfing Fitzgibbons notched four of the top 10 wave scores and two of the top three heat totals, proving that she was the inform surfer of the event and that she's not being hampered by her wrist injury.

"It's unbelievable!" Fitzgibbons said. "I was just focusing on working through my boards and going through some heats and before I know it I'm in the final. Sofia (Mulanovich) is such a tough competitor, I knew she'd be able to get the score needed, so it was a nervous wait at the end there. To win in front of this crowd, with so much support feels amazing! Then to have won the US Open and then the first ever Australian Open back to back is a special achievement."

Comps, creativity & randomness!

I came to New Zealand with both high and low expectations... High expectations because it's such a pure and beautiful country, with amazing nature and the best milk coffees ever! The low expectations was directed mostly towards the actual snowboard competition. This because the conditions and the weather has been very challenging the last years I have come here. The fact that I also came straight from the beach and it's the first contest of the year made it's contribution for my motivation. Anyways, expectations should be limited, weather they are bad or good, so let's get to the fun part.

Pretty view flying over the South Island

After a good 20 hours of traveling, I arrived in Wanaka, a mountain town on the South Island of New Zealand. The town is located by the beautiful Lake Wanaka and is also surrounded by spectacular mountains. The town is mostly based around outdoor opportunities, like for example canoeing, climbing, golfing, skydiving, skiing and snowboarding, but you can also enjoy a flat white at one of the many cute cafes and great restaurants, if you're not up for that kind of action...

My favorite country to have a flat white...

My expectations of bad weather never made it further then the next morning; I woke up to blue skies and warm temperatures and a pristine looking Lake outside my window.
The next days mostly got dedicated to practice for the competition up at Cardrona ski resort and getting a grip on my jet-lag. I was grateful for my jet-lag because there is something very special about driving up to the mountain early morning, watching the sun peaking out over the mountain tops, and actually being awake to enjoy it.

Sunrise drive to Cardrona ski resort

Another favorite moment driving up the steep roads to the mountain, was the random dude dressed as a woman, vacuuming the road by himself. The best part was actually that he had no cameras or friends to document his random activity... It was simply just for laughs!

RANDOM moment

Up at the mountain, the competition course were looking great, but the jumps were a bit larger than last year, so I was feeling the butterflies already. The 22 foot u-shaped piece of art aka the halfpipe, looked surprisingly good, a bit narrow but something to work with as the days went on. I enjoyed taking laps on the lift, getting my feet back on the board after a longer summer and slowly getting used to the competition courses. The contest days came up fast, with slopestyle semifinals to start off on thursday morning.

One Life, One Love! Great sign at the lift!

I landed one of my runs and qualified 4th, and was excited to get to ride the finals. The next day I landed my two first finals runs and ended up 2nd after the winner Jamie Anderson. My best run consisted of: 360 tap, 50-50 to backside boardslide, 50-50 to bs. 180 off the pole jam, cab 540 indy, fs. 720 mute and a fs 360 stalefish. The course and weather stayed perfect, actually the best conditions I have ever ridden here.

Hitting the first feature of the course

After the finals, I went straight to the pipe for the semifinals. I was pretty tired, but nothing beats some good old adrenaline when you are about to crash. I managed to pull off the best inverted 720 I have ever done, and made it to finals on 5th place, so the the day turned out to be pretty rad! I went to bed exhausted that night, but motivated to ride some more pipe...

After semifinals in pipe I was so tired and ready for bed that I almost forgot about the prize-giving. I made it to the podium just in time to get my moment of fame and congratulate the other girls and guys.

Jordie, Jamie and Me
Air-to-fakie that gave me CUOS Award

The next  morning I tried some good old air-to-fakies in practice, but I was mainly focusing on pacing my energy, since I was running on fumes. The finals started and the first contest run that went down made everybody on the top go; wooohhhh! Spanish rider Queralt Castellet dropped in and did the biggest bs. 900 I have ever seen from a girl and set the standard for the rest of the day.

I was inspired by the American mafia, Kelly, Gretchen, Elena and Hannah, that did not disappoint! fs and bs 900's, cab 720 and huge airs went down left and right. I laso surprised myself and landed a good run, witch earned me 6th place out of 8th riders in the finals. I also won the creative use of space award, for my air-to-fakie on the first hit, something that I feel very honored to win.

Big thanks to my sponsors, Roxy, Monster, DNB Nor and KAB for the amazing support. Special thanks to "coach of the week", One Life team captain Chanelle Sladics for holding it down!

Girls spring photoshoot in Sierra at Tahoe!

A couple of weeks ago Jamie Anderson invited about 10 girls (skiers and snowboarders) to shoot and ride the private park at her home mountain Sierra at Tahoe. Similar to last year, Jamie wanted the shoot to be fun, progressive and laidback, witch is perfect after a long and intense season. The park had three jumps in a line, a hip, variety of boxes, a pole and a creative rail feature at the bottom. Other Roxy riders there was Aimee Fuller and Erin Comstock. We had all kinds of different weather, everything from sun and slushy conditions to snow blizzard and powder. One of the powderdays we decided to switch equipment, so that the skiers went snowboarding and the snowboaders went skiing. Me and Aimee tried a rail and felt pretty gnarly. Jamie was a great host and rented a big house at the lake for all the riders to stay at. In the evenings we laid on the dock, played games, edited, shot photos and played music. Here are some pictures from the fun week...

Chicken Jammin' Part 2

Chicken Jammin' Part 1

The Roxy Chicken Jam, in Mammoth always inspires good times and these two episodes from One Life is all about that! ...we arrived in Mammoth just in time for my cold to kick in, full force. The first days I decided to stay inside to try to get my body healing, using all kinds of herbs, getting acupuncture treatments and sleeping a lot. In the meantime it was absolutely dumping outside, something that meant waist deep powder riding for fellow One Lifers, Sarka Pancochova and Chanelle Sladics. Thursday night it was time for our good friend and singer/songwriter Kellen Malloy to perform at Roxy and One Life's benefit concert. We are doing our best to raise funds towards eco education, and organic food fundraisers. He played some amazing sets and we sold wristbands from Keep-A-Breast. A guest appearance from Eddie Wall was a perfect end to the fun night at Hyde! The next days several practices got cancelled due to the heavy snowfalls, and while the girls shredded fresh powder, I was a good girl and stayed inside to heal my sore throat. Saturday came up fast and it was time for the contest to happen. The only problem was the 100 mph wind gusts that made it very challenging for anyone or anything to operate. Most of the lifts were closed, the rails were covered in snow and the jumps were shut down, so the organizers at Roxy decided to get creative. With a go-pro contest including prizes for "best team", "best trick" and "best pranks" the girls took on the challenge with great enthusiasm. For me, the goal was to make my way up to the mountain/ cafeteria area, so I could watch the "Roxy Powder Jam" go down! Face shots, tied-together shoe lazes, zip-tied boards, bathroom scares and the pranking of Todd Richards on live webcast, were just some ingredients from this very creative day! Check out our Chicken Jammin' Part One and Two to find out more of what went down..."

One Life, It's a movement!

Half Pipe skiing is entering the Winter Olympic Games

It’s official ! Half Pipe skiing is entering the Winter Olympic Games program for Sotchi 2014!

As world n°1 in the discipline, Roxy rider Sarah Burke shared her enthusiasm regarding this great news :
“I’m very excited and thrilled. I’ve been waiting for this for a number of years and have been pushing for it.  So now that it’s happening, it’s pretty exciting. It’s still a ways off but this has been a dream of mine since I was a child. It’s a dream come true. I hope to get the chance to make my country proud and bring home a medal.”  Sarah Burke, 5 time Winter X Games Gold Medalist, Freeski HalfPipe.

Sarah Burke Interview

As leader of the half pipe skiing, how do you receive the info that your sport is going to be Olympic ?
I am so very excited with this news.  Going to the Olympics has been a dream of mine since I was a child.  And getting Halfpipe skiing in to the Olympics has been my goal for the last few years.  We have finally reached that and I couldnt be happier.

SarahburkeW How long have you been waiting/working for it ?
I have been working towards this for roughly 6 years.  It would have been amazing to have gotten it in for Vancouver being that it was my home but at this very moment nothing else matters besides the fact that we will officially have our chance to participate.  We are all really looking forward to competing on the worlds stage.

Do you consider the Olympics as the final goal as a competitor ?
I dont consider it a final goal because I hope I never stop having goals within my skiing but it is definitely my biggest goal. This will be my main focus for the next 3 years hands down.

What can you expect from being an olympian ?
I am not too sure what to expect but having been there in Vancouver and getting to watch one of my close friends Torah Bright compete, I know it is going to be a very special time.  I am looking forward to the whole experience, to making my country proud, and hopefully bringing a medal home.
