Lay Day Called for Roxy Pro Gold Coast

News13

After four consecutive days of action, event organizers have opted for a lay day for the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover. The opening stop on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast has enjoyed non-stop action since the opening day of the waiting period, but onshore winds and a decreasing swell have forced event organizers to call competition off for the day.

“The swell is on the decrease and the onshore winds are scheduled to get worse throughout the day so we’ve called a lay day,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “I cannot remember a time when we’ve ran the first four days of a combined event and we’re in a good position to capitalize on the remainder of the waiting period. The swell forecast for this weekend looks promising but we’ll be back tomorrow morning to assess conditions and make a call then.”

ASP Elite Go Big at Business End of Roxy Pro Gold Coast

News12

The Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover, the opening stops on the 2012 Men's and Women's ASP World Championship Tours, today whittled the field down to the just eight men and four women with the world's best surfers tested in tricky two-to-three foot (1 metre) surf at Snapper Rocks.

Tyler Wright (AUS), 17, runner-up at the 2011 Roxy Pro, eliminated reigning ASP Women's World Champion and defending event winner Carissa Moore in a re-match of last year's Final. Wright was ferocious in her assault on the waves at Snapper Rocks, posting two excellent scores en route to causing the biggest upset of the event.

I knew I had to do something big to beat her, Wright said. She's the ASP Women's World Champ. I think she won three events last year so I knew it was going to be tough. I was lucky enough that I got the good waves. If she got them she would have smashed me too.

Wright will face compatriot Laura Enever (AUS), 20, in the Semifinals of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast when competition resumes.

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 21, 2011 ASP Women's World Runner-Up, clocked a pair of scores in the 8-point-range to eliminate newcomer Malia Manuel (HAW), 18, in today's Quarterfinals. Manuel would end up with Eqaul 5th and bragging rights as the highest placed rookie at the 2012 Roxy Pro.

That was a really good result to start the year off, Fitzgibbons said. Yesterday I was struggling with my board choice and wave selection and it's good to fix that up. It was really nice out there with really fun waves. I'm feeling fired up. I'm still finding my feet after having not too much surfing time in the off season with a wrist injury, but it's all coming together and I'm looking forward to the Semifinals.

Fitzgibbons will take on four-time ASP Women's World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, in the Semifinals when competition resumes. The Gold Coast natural-footer seems to have found her form at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast and will be a dangerous draw when the event recommences.

Performance Bar Raised as Roxy Pro Gold Coast Narrows the Field

News10

The Roxy Pro Gold Coast saw the ASP Top 17 battle through the elimination Round 3 with sterling performances from some new faces.

Laura Enever (AUS), 20, 2012 ASP Dream Tour sophomore, posted a big win in her non-elimination Roxy Pro Round 3 clash against Paige Hareb (NZL), 21, and reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Carissa Moore (HAW), 19. With today’s victory, Enever will now advance directly into the Quarterfinals while Hareb and Moore have to battle it out in Round 4.

“It was a good heat,” Enever said. “Paige (Hareb) got a 9.30 and Carissa (Moore) got an 8.07, and I was thinking I’ve got my work cut out for me. I just decided to wait for a good one, and I saw that wave and I did my first turn and let go and it all worked out. I got into the Semis last year and I’d love to go one or two better this year.”

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, the 4-times ASP Women’s World Champion also advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Roxy Pro today after posting two solid score in the 8-point-range (out of a possible 10). It’s clear Gilmore is familiar with the Snapper lineup as she caught the best waves and timed her carves and turns perfectly.

“That Round 3 when no-one loses is pretty relaxed, but skipping Round 4 is also on everyone’s minds,” Gilmore said. “It’s hard out there performance wise because there’s not a lot of waves with sections on offer. I didn’t watch too many heats before mine, but saw Laura (Enever) get a couple of good ones. She looks like she’s got something to prove, she’s so radical with her hair flicks and tail slides, it definitely fired me up to go out and put on a show too.”

Malia Manuel (HAW), 20, and Tyler Wright (AUS), 17, took out the other two heat of Round 3 by posting some excellent scores to skip Round 4 and advance directly into the Quarterfinals.

What a weekend of competition for the Roxy Snow Team! The Roxy Snow riders have been on fire with two more podiums today to add to the two from yesterday. Marogt Rozies took top spot at the Freeride World Tour Roldal event to bring her a step closer to taking the top spot in the overall freeride world tour standings and Katie Ormerod rode in to a well deserved second place in the junior girls halfpipe contest at the European Open in Laax. Katie is one of the few riders to be able to podium in both the halfpipe and slopestyle events.

The Freeride podium was 1st Margot Rozies (FRA), 2nd Shannan Yates (USA), 3rd Maria DeBari (USA). Margot burst on to the tour this year and was sitting firmly in second place before the Roldal event. Her strong and versatile riding have made her a standout on the tour this season and as she gains experience she is gong from strength to strength. Margot, who has a lot of contest experience in freestyle snowboarding, is taking her freeride skills to the big mountain and together with her aggressive riding style she is definitely making her mark. With two more events to go on the tour Margot is now in 2nd spot in the overall. She will next compete in Fieberbrunn, Austria later in March before heading to the final event in Verbier, Switzerland at the end March. Great job Margot!

Katie on the podium for the second time in the weekend!! Podium is 1st Zoe Galapos (USA) 2nd Katie Ormerod (UK), 3rd Ramona Petrig (CH).

ASP Top 17 Battle Through Elimination Round 2 at Roxy Pro Gold Coast

News8

The world's best female surfers returned to the Snapper Rocks lineup for Round 2 of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover this morning, continuing to push the boundaries of high-performance surfing in front of a capacity crowd on the beach.

Laura Enever (AUS), 20, 2012 ASP Top 17 sophomore and Semifinalist at last year's Roxy Pro Gold Coast, advanced to Round 3 this morning after a close heat against Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 32. Both surfers struggled to find a good score early in the heat but built up the momentum with exciting exchanges towards the finish.

Jacqueline (Silva) is an amazing surfer and a veteran on tour so she's really wise and know what she's doing out there so you can't count her out, Enever said. I just tried to stay calm and ended up finding a good one at the end and it worked out. When I lost yesterday I was a bit bummed, but I just took it as a positive that I get to surf Snapper one more time and feel my board out and now I'm looking forward to the next round.

Lakey Peterson (USA), 17, 2012 ASP Women's World Championship Tour rookie bounced back from a Round 1 loss yesterday, by defeating Pauline Ado (FRA), 21, in this morning's Round 2. Peterson caught one of the best looking waves of the day and launched into a series of carving turns and was rewarded with a 9.00 (out of a possible 10) by the judges.

I've been looking forward getting here to the Gold Coast for quite some time since I qualified, Peterson said. We've had a few months off, I've been getting ready and training for this. The waves are fun and the sun came out today, and the crowd is amazing. I'm just so happy to be here surfing against my heroes, these girls are so much fun to surf against because it makes me surf better.

Silvana Lima (BRA), 27, posted the highest heat total of the day to send trials' winner Philippa Anderson (AUS), 19, home with an equal 13th place finish and USD$4,500.

I'm so happy about that 9-point-ride! Lima said. I've had problems with my knee lately, but I just tried to forget about it. So I went out there and surf for me and all of Brazil and now I don't feel any pain in my knee!

Sarah Mason (NZL), 16, caused the upset of the event thus far eliminating Coco Ho (HAW), 20, after opening the heat with a score in the excellent range. Mason has been living on the Gold Coast for the past few years and put her local knowledge to good use against the last year's ASP Women's World No. 6.

I was really excited for that heat because the waves looked so fun! Mason said. I just knew if I could get the right waves I could get some scores. I just tried to catch the best waves and was really trying to enjoy surfing Snapper with just one other person out.

Event organisers will reconvene at 6:30am to access conditions for a possible 7:30am start.
