Spain’s Daida Moreno has clinched her 10th world windsurfing title in the wave category in Sylt, Germany (adding to victories in 2000, 2001, 2002,2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009 2010). After ten long days spent waiting in vain for wind and waves, the Spaniard was unfortunately prevented from sealing her victory with a competitive stage win.
Capping a remarkable season that saw her outclass all her rivals, the Roxy girl’s latest title – secured despite three stages of this year’s tour being abandoned due to poor conditions - confirmed her status as the leader in her discipline. Her title got off to a flying start earlier in the season when she took the first two stages of the 2011 world championships, the first on home territory at Pozo Izquierdo in Gran Canaria in July, and the second a few days later at Cabezo on the neighbouring Canary Island of Tenerife. Displaying her legendary tenacity and wide repertoire of moves, Daida Moreno definitely stepped up another level this season, dominating in the jumps and even allowing herself a few double loops, a move usually only attempted by the top guys!!! In her wake, her sister Iballa took second spot on the PWA Tour, becoming vice-world champion in the same category, a fine family triumph for the two exceptional champions and regular training partners.
With these two latest international successes, the twins have now racked up an astonishing 22 world titles between them, a real record in terms of performance and longevity, in the fiercely contested
world of women’s windsurfing that had previously not seen such dominance. The sisters have now been in the ascendancy for over 10 years!
Roxy ambassadresses since 1999, Daida and Iballa Moreno have also succeeded in diversifying their repertoire over the years, adding strings to their bows on windless days by turning their hands to surfing and stand up paddling, disciplines they now practise assiduously whenever their packed schedules permit.
At 33, the Moreno twins are far from ready to hang up their wishbones, and so we will no doubt be seeing them again next year for another titanic sister on sister battle for supremacy, as they vie to become 2012 World Champion!
