Congrats Laura and Sally...!!! Second and third at the Pantin Classic

_MG_5096

Final Day today for the girls in Pantin..

Courtney Conlogue (USA)  claimed the Cabreiroa Surfing Girls title an ASP Women's Star-Series 6-Star sanctioned event downing Laura Enever (AUS) in the 35-minute final.
Clean 2-3ft (1m) waves were on offer with the occasional bigger set during the morning as the swell increased slightly. Long lefts peeled off the main bank at Pantin with all competitors able to lay down combinations of manoeuvres.

Laura and Courtney met for the second time in an ASP Women's Star-Series 6-Star final in less than two weeks and after Laura's win in Azores, Courtney took this one.

Laura  had to be content with runner-up position  having taken out Tyler Wright (AUS) in a closely fought semi-final, she never stopped searching for scoring rides however the wave starved final 10 minutes left her short of her required score.

“I am stoked to make another final and get another result. This time Courtney got back at me from the last event but it's all good. In the final at the end there was a lack of waves but it has definitely been a fun week here in Pantin. To get to back-to-back finals is never easy and I'm really happy with this overall result.”

Congrats also to sally, finishing equal third, and well done to Ornella and Johanne for their 9th place.

Everyone says hi and we ll be back soon!!

Second day at Pantin WQS 6*

IMG_0003

PANTIN, Spain (Wednesday, August 25, 2010) – Tyler Wright (AUS) scored a perfect 10 and a combined heat total of 19.80 out of a possible 20 to ignite Round One of the Cabreiroa Surfing Girls. The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned Women's Star-Series 6-Star event ran through to complete Round One and half of Round Two in excellent 4-5ft (1.5m) waves during a fabulous afternoon session of competitive surfing at the main event site of Pantin.

Event officials were forced to place the Cabreiroa Surfing Girls on hold throughout the entire morning due to small inconsistent waves. With the arrival of the predicted swell increase and the incoming tide, athletes found themselves surfing long, peeling, over-head lefts and rights.

Incredibly hot weather brought the masses out to witness a spectacular day of women's surfing from the strong international field which include the current top 20 ranked women of the ASP Women's Star-Series World Rankings.

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) was not to be out done and despite having a poor opening heat came alive in her Round Two clash claiming an 8.17 and a 9.17 point ride with a mixture of modern power manoeuvres on the long rights.

“It was fun second time around because my first heat was terrible and I was lucky to get through so I wanted to go out and get some good waves and open up. The swell has picked up and there were waves pulsing so I was really excited to get out there and to get a couple of high scores is great.”

Always looking to improve her surfing Fitzgibbons was able to use the excellent conditions to her advantage as she pulled off some innovative progressive surfing.

“I do these events to get in some good practice for the World Tour events so I try and do different combinations of turns and try things out because sometimes you can't but today the waves were really good for the contest.”

Following in Tyler Wright's footsteps Fitzgibbons was motivated to match her good friend's earlier scores and impress the huge crowd watching the late afternoon action unfold

“I have been hanging out with Tyler and she had the perfect heat and I was watching thinking that I want to be out there with her and hopefully we can meet up later in the draw.”

“I was getting a lot of waves and some good scores and it was tough in that heat. I found the waves with a nice wall and I hope I can keep it up in the next rounds.”

Laura Enever (AUS) pushing the limits

Laura Enever (AUS) current nº2 on ASP Women's Star-Series World Ranking stormed through her Round One heat and showed everyone she is in red hot form and busting with confidence after her recent win 10 days ago. Scoring several solid rides Enever finished up with a two-wave combined total of 15.34 out of a possible 20.

“There were definitely some fun waves out there and for sure the biggest waves I've surfed in a while so it was fun. It was almost like a point break similar to my home break at North Narabeen, Alley Rights so I was glad to get a couple of waves probably the most I've caught in a heat before.(laughs)”

“I'm not too nervous but coming off a win you want to do another good performance so I am trying not to think about that and just take it heat by heat and have another good contest and get a result.”

For European athletes the Cabreiroa Surfing Girls is the final stop of on the ASP European Women's Series which is being lead by Pauline Ado (FRA) followed by Joanne Defay (FRA), Justine Dupont (FRA) and Cannelle Bulard (REU). All four surfers are within 200 points of each other meaning the title race is well and truly open leading into this final event.

A call will be made at 09:00 (local time) tomorrow Day 3 of the official waiting period for the Ferrolterra Movistar Pantin Classic Presented by Billabong and the Cabreiroa Surfing Girls.

Surf at Doninos during lay day in Pantin

"We had a good time during the lay day yesterday, we went with the girls in an other spot: Doninos, which is more west (20 min by car), really nice beach, uncrowded and wedgy waves.

Alone in the water, rare during summer in Europe...

Today waves are pretty small in Pantin, girls will may be run their 1st round. See you this evening for the report!"

History: The history of Pantín Classic began in 1988, making this event one of oldest pro surfing contest of Spain. During the last two decades riders such as C.J. Hobgood, Damien Hardman and legendary surfers Tom Curren and Billabong's Mark Occhiluppo blessed this event. This year again, the Ferrolterra Movistar Pantín Classic presented by Billabong will witness world class surfing with the participation of big names like Raoni Monteiro, Leonardo Neves and Rodrigo Dornelles from Brasil, Dayyan Neve, Shaun Cansdell, and Yadin Nicol from Australia, USA's Cory Lopez , Gabe Kling and Nat Curran, Hawaii's Sunny Garcia and John-John Florence, and of course a great european contingent with Billabong's Hodei Collazo and Markos San Segundo (EUK), followed by Aritz Aramburu (EUK), Goñi Zubizarreta (ESP), Joan Duru (FR), Michael Picon (FR) all already confirmed.

The spot: Pantín is located northwest of Galicia, in the province of A Coruña where the holy town of Santiago de Compostela is located. This region is exceptionally beautiful and diverse! The landscape is a highlight with cliffs, rivers, mountains, valleys and endless beaches. Pantín has long been called “The Wave Factory” by the locals, as there are waves almost 365 days a year.

What's new: For the first time in the history of the Pantin Classic, the Ferrolterra Movistar Pantín Classic by Billabong has progressed this year into the small elite group of 6-Star events, making it one of the most important WQS events (World Qualifying Series) in the World! Laura Enever claims Azores WQS 6* Women's Pro

Laura Enever first victory on WQS tour

SAO MIGUEL, Azores Islands (Saturday, August 14, 2010) – Laura Enever (AUS) 18, today claimed her maiden ASP Women's Star-Series victory with a come-from-behind win over Courtney Conlogue (USA) 18, at the Billabong Azores Islands Women's Pro presented by Nissan an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned event.

Waves in the 1-2ft (0.5m) range were on offer with the occasional bigger set coming through. After waiting for the tide to lower event officials gave the green light to start with clear skies and light off-shore winds making small but ideal conditions for the 35-minute final.

After watching her opponent get off to a flying start Laura Enever clawed her way back into the final using her priority to nail a 9.17 out of a possible 10 to escape from a combination situation and place herself within striking distance of the Billabong Azores Islands Women's Pro title. With 5 minutes remaining both girls had an exchange which Enever came out on top with another excellent 8.17 point ride to turn the tables on Conlogue.

Laura had a good suport on the beach with aussies friends

“Courtney got a couple of quick scores up on me and she had me needing a combination of scores for quite a while and I couldn't actually find one but then I got that 9 point ride and I knew that I could do it which I eventually did backing up it up with another good score so I was really happy in the end. It was really cool because I had a whole lot of guys supporting me so it felt really good to win the final and do it for them.”

“I knew that if I got two turns in I would be able to get a score,” continued Enever. “So that was what I was looking for and I needed only a low score so I waited for another one to come in because it would have been pretty stupid of me to have lost it from there so I am really stoked with the way it all worked out.”

Claiming her first ASP Women's Star-Series title Enever was ecstatic with her win and thankful for all the support from friends on the shoreline. Her best result so far this year the 3000 points will definitely boost her higher on the ASP Women's World rankings.

“It's my first Star-Series final and my first win ever so at the moment I am sitting in 3rd position on the rankings so this will push me up and I am really looking forward to the next event in Spain and hopefully I can back it up there with another result.”

“Actually I was thinking how angry the boys on the beach would be if I lost by a combination,” explained Enever about how she was feeling at the half way stage of the final. “Especially after all the coaching they have been giving me the past couple of days. So I knew I had to get a good wave out there to show them what I can do and I ended up getting that 9 and it got me on a bit of a roll and I just waited for another good one.”
