Good results for Roxy at Sopelana Pro Junior in Spain

SOPELANA – Basque Country/Spain (Friday, July 30, 2010) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Nikita Pro Junior Sopelana today crowned both men’s and women’s champions during another long day of competitive surfing.

Peaky 3ft (1m) waves were on offer during the day with event officials halting the event during the lower tide to allow the best conditions possible for the finals late this afternoon. Clear skies and perfect beach weather assured a huge crowd lining the shore. With the swell decreasing and a poor prediction for the following days organisers were forced to finish two days ahead of schedule.

Maud Lecar (FR) second place and Johanne Defay (FR) Third place

Maud Lecar (FRA) 18, finished runner up in her first ever ASP Pro Junior final ahead of current European Junior title holder Joanne Defay (FRA) and Marie Dejean (FRA) who placed fourth: “It’s my first time in a pro junior final and I am very happy to get second place and to try and stay in the top 5 in Europe. Alizee is surfing so good and in the final she got that 9 point ride and she is surfing very strong so I was left fighting for second place against Joanne and we had a good fight for the second place.”

"We just came back from spain this evening, tomorrow, no waves, so the girls can relax; after that training at Hossegor to be ready for the WQS 6* in Azores Island (PRT) next week.

All our international team will be there: Bianca Buitendag (ZAF), Laura Enever (AUS), Rosy Hodge (AUS) and Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) came back for their second trip in Europe this year, that contest will be exciting for sure!!

See you soon for more news."

The Roxy Jam closes the door on an exceptionally successful public event: A total of more than 43,000 spectators (concerts and competition)

ROXY SS11 LIFESTYLE_5070

The Roxy Jam Biarritz 2010 concluded today on a high note. This unique festival blending surfing, art and music has seen an average attendance of 5,000 people per day frequenting the Côte des Basques. In total, an estimated 25,000 people made up the confluence of spectators who converged on the site to follow the ASP Women's Longboard World Championship won by American Cori Schumacher, the expressions sessions, art exhibitions, the Roxy Charity Shop and various events organised around the theme of recycling.

In parallel, the Roxy Jam organised two major concerts. The first in the idyllic setting of Port Vieux with the live performance of a very wild Parisian band, La Femme, whose members hail from Biarritz, followed by Australian musician Micky Green, who electrified the audience with his mellifluous pop stylings, and finally the glamorous rockers Plasmatics, who shook the stage on Saturday, July 10. The free concert attracted 8,000 spectators according to sources at the City of Biarritz. The following day, Micky Green also took to the water in the company of longboard icon, Kassia Meador.

Finally, 10,000 spectators filled up the esplanade Beaurivage ensuring the success of the grand electro soirée that brought together DJs Sam Red, winner of the JBL European Competition and Roxy “Next Girl DJ” Estelle Surbranche, editor in chief of Flavor and DJ at the Bar du Ritz and last but not the least one of the stars of the current electro music scene, DJ Chloé.

The Roxy Jam Biarritz ended on Wednesday evening with a Tandem demonstration on the Grand Beach followed by the spectacular fireworks show which has become a tradition for the City of Biarritz.

Kassia Meador work seen throught media

Kassia_video_Roxy200

Surfer, photographer and artist Kassia Meador is everywhere you look this summer. Whether it is her photos spread across SURFER the Big Issue, fashion features in Foam, the cover shot of Cooler or her competing in the World Longboarding Championship, the world cannot help but see the California native.

"It's been such a busy year," Meador said. "With so many wonderful opportunities presenting themselves right now, I just can't pass a thing up. I'm lucky to have all of these talented surfers, photographers and editors to make beautiful images with. SURFER offers readers a sneak peak of "Making Beautiful," Meador's photo book project with David Mushegain.

While the book won't be out until next year, SURFER features six-pages of images from the book and some background on the girls that will be featured. In addition to the photo spread in SURFER the Big Issue, Meador is featured in a two-page Roxy ad for the new Cynthia Rowley collection. Foam's September issue is already out and features a 10-page fashion story themed, 'Into the Wild.'

The latest issue of Cooler features Meador's work on the cover. She was chosen to capture a series of lifestyle images of her close friend and ASP World Longboard Surf Champion, Jen Smith. It's not all photography for the longboarder. Meador is currently in France, after competing in the Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championships (WWLC) and displaying her work at the "California Movement" Exhibit in Woodstock Gallery at the Docks de la Negresse in Biarritz.

From Biarritz she'll be heading to Bordeaux for the Summer Art and Music Show July 15 - 19 presented by FlowFeeling. Back in the States, Meador will be in New York for the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences (LBIF) art exhibit, "Where Oceans Converge", featuring a blend of East and West Cost artists who use the ocean, waves and surfing as their inspiration.

"Where Oceans Converge" will be on display July 28th through August 17th in the LBIF Main Gallery, in Loveladies, NJ. Keep up with Kassia's travels, surfing, art and photos online at the newly re-launched KassiaMeador.com. Cori Schumacher Wins the 2010 Roxy ASP Women’s World Longboard Title

___ID-46--4-CoriSchumacherUSAWinnerRJ2010PoullenotAquashot

LA COTE DES BASQUES, Biarritz, France (Sunday, July 11, 2010) – Cori Schumacher (California, USA), 33, has won the Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championships today in Biarritz, at the world famous venue of La Côte des Basques defeating fellow finalist Kaitlin Maguire (California, USA), 22, in clean two-to-three foot (0.5 to 1 meter) waves in a 100% American heat.

Claiming her first ever ASP World title after several years amongst the world's best female longboarders' contingent, Schumacher stepped-up to her reputation to dominate the last action-packed day of the contest posting the event's highest single-wave and heat scores respectively a 9.25 and 17.25 points.

“It feels so good right now,” freshly crowned Schumacher said. “It was like six minutes to the end and feelings just all washed over me and I was tingling. It's such an amazing feeling to win. I had some pressure though when I paddled into a wave and left Kaitlin (Maguire) on her own because she can pull a world championship out of her hat anytime.”

Coming out on top of a series of intense exchanges in a well-fought final after eliminating two former world champions in the Quarterfinals (Jennifer Smith) and the Semifinals (Joy Monahan), Schumacher's solid 13.15 score to Maguire's 9.80 confirmed her domination over the weekend, her smart heat tactics and strategy giving her the final shot at the title.

“I took a gamble to paddle into that last wave and hoped for the conditions to slow down as it had been doing the last three days,” Schumacher said. “It paid up, the gamble went well!”

Maguire, who was surfing her first final in an ASP World title decider event, came short of five points leaving the 2010 edition with the runner-up spot, a promising result and a guarantee to return in next year's ASP Women's World Longboard Championships along with the event's top 16 surfers.

“I was really exhausted for the final,” Maguire said. “Doing the semis and the final in a row was a tough one but it was a good heat. I surfed my best and she surfed better. I was really aiming at the title coming to France so it's disappointing to come one spot short.”

LA COTE DES BASQUES, Biarritz, France (Sunday, July 11, 2010) – Action is back ON and the remaining sixteen contenders for the ASP Women's World Longboard title are all ready to deliver their best performance.

Roxy team rider and last year's Asp Women's World Longboard No. 5 Kassia Meador (California, USA) lost to other favorite Cori Schumacher (USA) in the opening heat of the day, for the first major upset of the event.

The conditions have changed to windy three-foot waves and event officials have decided to run as many heats as possible, scheduling a possible finish tomorrow Monday.

“The wave forecast has changed a lot but we are still getting some good contestable waves,” contest director Philippe Malvaux said. “Predictions are pretty hard so we'll try to run as far as possible and re-assess conditions later in the day.”

Stay tuned on www.roxyjam.com for latest updates and news from the 2010 Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championships.
