Roxy girl
Sally Fitzgibbons bowed out yesterday in the final of the Movistar Peru
Classic, the fifth stage of the ASP Women’s World Tour, which took place at the
legendary spot in San Bartolo. Despite a fine run to the final, the Australian
ultimately came up short against Silvana Lima, more experienced in the South
American waves.
Nevertheless,
with this second place Sally Fiztgibbons confirmed her great start to the year
was no flash in the pan, as she demonstrated impressive consistency to produce
almost perfect rounds throughout the competition. Highlights included her
victory over Coco Ho in the quarter-finals, and a superb semi win against Sofia
Mulanovich.
The young
Aussie (19) finished in second spot for the third time running this year,
strengthening her hold on second place in the overall ASP Tour rankings, behind
compatriot Stéphanie Gilmore.
“Another
bridesmaid,” Fitzgibbons said. “It’s a good result all the same and great for
my rating, but I want to win one really bad. Silvana (Lima) was ripping though.
I couldn’t really get into a good rhythm in that heat. I felt good all day, but
she got the jump on me and I was never able to answer back. It’s all good
though. We’ve had amazing support here in Peru and I’m looking forward to the
next one.”
The next leg
of the ASP Women’s World Tour 2010 will take place in Portugal from October 7
to 11, with French star Lee Ann Curren set to make her Tour comeback after
injury.
