Sally Fitzgibbons takes second place in the Movistar Peru Classic

Fitzgibbons_s9145peru10morris_n

Roxy girl Sally Fitzgibbons bowed out yesterday in the final of the Movistar Peru Classic, the fifth stage of the ASP Women’s World Tour, which took place at the legendary spot in San Bartolo. Despite a fine run to the final, the Australian ultimately came up short against Silvana Lima, more experienced in the South American waves.

Nevertheless, with this second place Sally Fiztgibbons confirmed her great start to the year was no flash in the pan, as she demonstrated impressive consistency to produce almost perfect rounds throughout the competition. Highlights included her victory over Coco Ho in the quarter-finals, and a superb semi win against Sofia Mulanovich.

The young Aussie (19) finished in second spot for the third time running this year, strengthening her hold on second place in the overall ASP Tour rankings, behind compatriot Stéphanie Gilmore.

“Another bridesmaid,” Fitzgibbons said. “It’s a good result all the same and great for my rating, but I want to win one really bad. Silvana (Lima) was ripping though. I couldn’t really get into a good rhythm in that heat. I felt good all day, but she got the jump on me and I was never able to answer back. It’s all good though. We’ve had amazing support here in Peru and I’m looking forward to the next one.”

The next leg of the ASP Women’s World Tour 2010 will take place in Portugal from October 7 to 11, with French star Lee Ann Curren set to make her Tour comeback after injury.

European Championship SUP race in Saint-Maxime, France

Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 May, the European Championship Paddle race took place in Saint-Maxime, the bay of Saint Tropez.
A total of 103 Paddlers came together from California, France, Spain, Italy, Germany and Holland to compete; a very great turnout.

On Saturday, the day started with a relay race. SUP1SUP2

The relay team is put together with 4 people; with a minimum of 1 woman.
Chuck Patterson, Byron Kurt and Xavier Masdevall were looking for 1 girl, so I joined them – using the Starboard 12′6″x26″ Surf Race (a board Pascal lent me. Merci Pascal!)
Our team; with a mix of champs became first, which is a good way to start an event ;-)

The 2nd race of the day was the 7 km distance. (12’6” and 14” foot)
The competitors paddled rounds around 6 buoys. After each round we had to run with our boards, about 20 meters over sand before entering the water again for the next round.

It seemed that the concept ‘the Battle of the Paddle’ in California was copied, a fun way to keep the paddlers close to the public and spectators.
Very good vibes from the water and land mixed together in how the SUP sport is being received during this first European event here in the south of France.
The wind was very light and the paddle conditions were good.
The board I could use for this race was “The Pin SUP3
12’6” by 30 – a design from last year -. (Merci Marc!) Compared to the “Surf Race” it was a bit slower. I ended 2nd place after Fabienne D’Ortoli; pro kite girl and since 2 years stand up paddler from France. Nicole Boronat from Spain, a long time-respectable pro water woman, became 3rd.

The 3rd race was held on Sunday, the 30th; a long distance from 14 km.
The conditions of this day were pretty rough with winds reaching gusts of 25 knots. The race was being adjusted for safety reasons; again rounds around buoys, but now bigger rounds. We were supposed to SUP from the bay of St. Tropez all the way to St. Maxim, but this route was not safe enough – big chance we would ‘fly down to Corsica -
The headwinds we would endure half way each round reminded me of the SUP 11-City Tour last year;
where we had long hours with ‘just that’. SUP4
I focused on each stroke and a steady rhythm, which I could keep the entire race.
I ended up fist from the women and also left some guys behind me, which is always fun. The board I used this day was again “The Pin”.

For video images and more results of the men (there were many men results; 15 podium places to share between classes of 12’6”, 14’ and unlimited), visit site: http://www.micromax.tv/film.php?idvideo=343

Sally Fitzgibbons and Sofia Mulanovich in quarterfinal at Movistar Peru Classic

Sgmpc10big

BARTOLO, Lima/Peru (Monday, June 7, 2010) - Rounds 2 and 3 of the Movistar Peru Classic presented by IPD, Stop No. 5 on the 2010 ASP Women's World Tour, were completed today in smaller-but-cleaner two-to-three foot (1 metre) lefthanders in San Bartolo.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, reigning three-time ASP Women's World Champion and current ASP Women's World No. 1, saw a sensational return to form today, posting the highest total of the event, a 16.50 out of a possible 20, to best wildcard Julia de la Rosa (PER).

"I just tried to shake Round 1 off and focus on today," Gilmore said. "Julia (de la Rosa) went over and tried to surf the right, but I felt that the left was the better option and that allowed me to catch a lot of waves and lock in some good scores. I definitely felt better about my surfing today than I did yesterday."

With three wins in four events this season, and two past ASP Women's World Tour event victories in Peru, the young Australian is the heavy favourite heading into the business end of the event.

"I've been very nervous the last two heats and I don't know why," Gilmore said. "I think drawing the wildcards early in the event can be really nerve-wracking because you never know what they'll produce. That said, it only gets harder from here on out, but I'm feeling much more confident today."

Gilmore will battle ASP Women's World Tour sophomore Paige Hareb (NZL), 20, in the Quarterfinals.

Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 26, former ASP Women's World Champion (2004) and defending Movistar Peru Classic winner, narrowly escaped an early elimination today, pulling out some last-minute heroics to overtake replacement surfer Sage Erickson (USA), 19, and advance through to the Quarterfinals.

"It was a really back-and-forth heat," Mulanovich said. "I got some mid-range scores early on and Sage (Erickson) posted a good one early. Neither of us really got anything until towards the end and Sage got a good one. It didn't look like it was going to be a good wave, but she's such a good surfer. She got the score and I was worried. There were still a couple minutes left and I got one that really stood up clean. When I heard the score I was so stoked."

The current ASP Women's World No. 3 will take on an in-form Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 26, in the Quarterfinals when Movistar Peru Classic competition resumes.

Silvana Lima (BRA), 25, 2009 ASP Women's World Runner-Up and current ASP Women's World No. 7, continued her roll at the Movistar Peru Classic today, utilizing her impressive backhand repertoire to post a solid 16.00 out of a possible 20 to

"The waves are much better today," Lima said. "It's smaller, but running much more perfectly. I am feeling good and I have good boards under my feet. Quarterfinals is a good result for me and I hope I can keep going."

Claire Bevilacqua (AUS), 27, current ASP Women's World No. 15, caused a major upset today, eliminating perennial Hawaiian powerhouse Melanie Bartels (HAW), 28, in Round 3 of competition.

"It's a shame that it took a close friend like Mel (Bartels) to get a heat win but you have to surf your best against the best," Bevilacqua said. "She (Bartels) has always brought out the best in me. The Quarterfinals is a good result, but the pressure is still on. Even though I'm a veteran of sorts, I am still leaning every heat and continuing to push my surfing."

When competition resumes, up first will be Lima and Bevilacqua in the opening Quarterfinal.

Movistar Peru Classic organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 9am to assess conditions for a possible 10am start.

Day 1 Movistar Peru ClassicSAN BARTOLO, Lima/Peru

Chmpcd110big
The ASP Top 17 blitzed San Bartolo's punchy three-to-four foot (1 metre) lefthanders today as Round 1 of the Movistar Peru Classic presented by IPD was completed.

Event No. 5 on the 2010 ASP Women's World Tour, the Movistar Peru Classic enjoyed its first day of competition, with the world's best female surfers annihilating the South American lefthander of San Bartolo.

Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 26, former ASP Women's World Champion (2005) and current ASP Women's World No. 4, capped off the day's festivities with the highest heat total of the day, a 16.43 out of a possible 20, for a rampaging forehand assault.

"I was considering the righthander before the heat started but I'm happy I surfed the left," Hedges said. "Any chance to get to surf my forehand, I like to take advantage. The waves seemed to pulse for that heat there and Coco (Ho) is such a good surfer that it really pushed my surfing."

With three Equal 3rds and an Equal 9th in her scorecard this season, the powerful goofy-footer is one of the few surfers who can make an assault on current ASP Women's World No. 1 Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22.

"I definitely feel like my surfing has been solid this season," Hedges said. "I made a strategic mistake in the last event that cost me the dearly. Trying to rebound from that and just push my surfing with each heat."

Gilmore advanced into Round 3 behind former ASP Women's World Tour campaigner Julia de la Rosa Toro (PER).

Silvana Lima (BRA), 25, 2009 ASP Women's World Runner-Up and current ASP Women's World No. 7, brought the South American flair this morning, posting a solid 13.90 out of a possible 20 to best Paige Hareb (NZL), 20, and Sage Erickson (USA), 19, in Round 1 of competition.

"The waves aren't too bad," Lima said. "There are some fun waves coming through and it's much better than everyone thought it was going to be. As the tide gets higher and the swell s a little bit, I think it will only get better."

While the young Brazilian has been a perennial threat at all venues since her elite inception, Lima has yet to make catch a fire in 2010, something she hopes to remedy in South America.

"I have had a consistent year but haven't made a Final yet," Lima said. "I feel like I am surfing well and I have good boards. Just have to stay focused and keep surfing."

Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 26, enjoyed the backing of hundreds of spectators on the beach today as the former ASP Women's World Champion (2004) blasted her way to a Round 1 victory.

"It's always an honor to surf at home in Peru," Mulanovich said. "The support from my family and friends is always appreciated. The waves today were pretty fun. It's not the best, but it's clean and contestable. Hopefully the waves improve over the next few days."

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 19, current ASP Women's World No. 2, continued to perform strongly in Round 1 today, posting an impressive win over Amee Donohoe (AUS), 29, and Anali Gomez (PER).

"It always feels good to get through Round 1," Fitzgibbons said. "I felt pretty good in the heat, but the waves were challenging. I've been in Peru for one or two weeks now and it's been good preparation. I was working at the Red Bull camp and getting used to the waves and the water."

Coming off two Runner-Up finishes in New Zealand and Sydney, the progressive natural-footer is keen to mount the winner's dais and sees Peru as the ideal opportunity.

"Sitting in No. 2 on the rankings and in the ASP Women's World Title hunt is a great place for me," Fitzgibbons said. "It takes the pressure off and makes me hungry to better myself at the same time. I've had a few Runner-Ups and to walk away with a win in Peru would be amazing."

Melanie Bartels (HAW), 28, current ASP Women's World No. 4, opened the day's affairs with an impressive display of backhand prowess amidst the morning's challenging conditions.

"It's really challenging out there," Bartels said. "There's a lot of water moving and it's hit or miss with the waves. These aren't the waves I'm used to  the water is cold and the lefts are lumpy  so I'm stoked to get through Round 1. I can relax a bit and focus on getting a good result in Peru."

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 8am to assess conditions for a possible 9am start.

When competition resumes, up first will be Bruna Schmitz (BRA), 20, Sage Erickson (AUS), 19, and Anali Gomez (PER) in the opening heat of Round 2.
