Sarah Baum victorious at Roxy Invitational Mozambique 2010

46956

Tofo, Mozambique – Durban surfer Sarah Baum has clinched the fourth annual Roxy Invitational surfing event in Mozambique. After two days of waiting for decent surf, the contest directors of this unique invitational event decided to run the final heat on the last day of the six-day waiting period in the three-foot contestable surf on offer at Tofinho Point, Tofo.

Baum got off to a slow start in the extended 40 minute final, while fellow Durbanite Kirsty Delport was quick off the mark and posted two solid scores in the six-point range. It wasn’t until halfway into the final when Baum hooked into a great looking wave and stylishly surfed her way to a 6.5 score. Taryn Chudleigh from Cape Town struggled in the testing conditions and didn’t manage to post scores to match the on-form Baum and Delport. Baum sealed the heat and win with six minutes to go when she cracked a good looking set wave from the outside, ending with a massive floater on the inside to score herself a much needed eight point ride.

“I am so stoked with the win! This is an event that I have been wanting to win for a while now and it feels good to finally do it. It is such a good event and really good for women’s surfing. Roxy really goes all out to make it a cool event, it’s definitely the event to look forward to every year” said Baum after receiving her winners cheque.

Baum took home R10 000 for her win while Delport and Chudleigh earned themselves R3 000 and R2 000 respectively. Faye Zoetmulder of Port Elizabeth received the “Resolution Wipe Out Award” and R1 000 for the loss of her toe nail and a heavy encounter with the Tofinho reef in her round 1 heat.

Another activity that had spectators clapping and screaming on the beach was the “Quiksilver Locals Surf-Off”. Six Tofinho local boys hit the surf eager to impress but it was Pedro Da Silva who impressed the most with his stylish surfing to be deemed king of the point. All the boys received a Quiksilver backpack, wallet, cap and t-shirt for their efforts.

Roxy is committed to the conservation of the area and competitors and event officials have left nothing but their footprints behind.

The event will be aired on an upcoming episode of Boardriders TV on SuperSport within the next two months. All results, photo’s and blog posts can be found at: www.roxy.co.za/invitational.

The Roxy Invitational is presented by Saltwater Girl, in association with Resolution and is supported by SuperSport and Liqui-Fruit.

Catching up with the ASP World Junior Champ Laura Enever

5_27blogresized

When it comes to finding an angle to take, there are few better in sport than to cover a hometown kid making good on their talent. Enter Laura Enever. A North Narrabeen surf rat by heart, last week she won the ASP World Junior title in front of all the “Northy boys.” It was the second world title of young Laura’s career, which leads me to believe we should pay her some mind. Here’s what she has to say about it all:

You’re the ASP World Junior Champ, how does it feel?
I’m feeling pretty amazing right now! I don’t think it has fully sunk in yet. To win the World Junior Title at home, and to be able to share with all my family and friends has always been my dream. The whole of North Narrabeen was pretty much packed on the beach supporting me and cheering me. When I won it was just such a special moment, everyone was so happy and excited, I felt like I had won the world title not only for me, but for my home. It was the perfect day. It was the best day of my life.

What was the hardest thing about winning the title?
In my first heat of the contest I got off to a really nervous start, and kind of freaked myself out. It was such a big lead up to the event and I just wanted to surf really well in front of everyone at home and do really good, but it backfired. I just got really nervous. After that heat I just told myself I wanted to have fun, not worry and just enjoy surfing my home break. Everything just went my way from there.

How did you celebrate your win?
Well, all the Northy boys had already started “celebrating” before my final even got underway. Then after I won everyone took me straight up to North Narrabeen Surf Club and we partied on. Quiksilver put a whole lot of money on the bar, so everyone was having the best time. All the Northy boys got me up on a table and sung me the North Narrabeen song and made me skull from the world title cup. I think they were proud of me.

There aren’t very many surfers that can say they’ve won both the ASP and the ISA world titles, what does that mean to you?
It is pretty cool. I guess world titles are something you can never take away from someone, so it’s pretty special. One day I would love to win the ASP World Title but for now I’m stoked on my junior world titles, and just want to take it all in and enjoy it.

What’s next on your schedule?
I’m heading up to the Gold Coast for the Roxy Pro trials, as well as the ASP Banquet, which I’m really excited about. I actually really wanted to win World Juniors so I could get invited to the banquet and go shopping and get dressed up with everyone. I’m so looking forward to it. Other than I’m going to just keep doing the Australiasion Pro Junior events this year, as well as the WQS contests. But I don’t really have any plans, I just want to go with the flow, have fun, surf some really good waves, and keep experiencing everything along the way. I’m really excited for the rest of the year.

SEIGNOSSE, Les Bourdaines, France (Sunday, May 16, 2010) – Current ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) was unstoppable as she charged to victory at the inaugural Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Swatch Girls Pro taking the title after overcoming Coco Ho (HAW) in the 35-minute final at the main contest site of Les Bourdaines.

The swell remained a solid 4-5ft (1-1.5m) throughout the entire day with a strong onshore wind making conditions again tough for the girls and turning heats into another battle of physical fitness as well as surfing ability.

Gilmore stormed home claiming the Swatch Girls Pro title leading from the opening siren and finishing off with an 8.5 out of a possible 10 with only seconds remaining smashing the long rights on offer at low tide to seal the victory which never looked in doubt.

Scoring a 9.8 and an 8.5 in her quarter-final Gilmore sent out a clear message that she was inform and gaining momentum with each performance. The reigning ASP Women’s World Junior Champion Laura Enever (AUS) came closest to causing an upset when she forced Gilmore to the wire in their semi-final however with less than 30-seconds to go Enever could only look on as her slim lead was shredded to pieces by the eventual Swatch Girls Pro winner.

Laura Enever in the final of Swatch Pro Junior

"SEIGNOSSE, Les Bourdaines, France (Friday, May 14, 2010) – The finalists of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Swatch Girls Pro Junior were decided during an action packed day of competitive surfing by the best European and overseas under-21 female juniors. The final will run over the weekend along with the Swatch Girls Pro a 6-Star Women's Star Series event which was again postponed allowing the future of women's surfing to showcase their talent at the main break of Les Bourdaines

Conditions were small and clean with a light cross-shore sea breeze throughout the afternoon as the low tide offered waves in the 2-3ft range. Surfing further south on low tide long rights ran along the bank allowing for some high performance surfing to be laid down by the girls."

Sarah Baum & Laura Enever win their heat in Swatch Pro Junior

SEIGNOSSE, Les Bourdaines, France (Thursday, May 13, 2010)

"Attention was focused on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Swatch Girls Pro Junior today where high quality small wave surfing showed cased the talented mix of top European and overseas under-21 junior female surfers. The Swatch Girls Pro a 6-Star Women's Star Series event called a lay day following a decision by event officials not to resume round 3 of competition.

Clean small 2ft (0.5m) waves greeted competitors at the main site at Les Bourdaines early this morning and as the tide ped offered a small window to run the Swatch Girls Pro Junior. With huge tides at the main contest site timing is crucial to maximise what waves are on offer throughout the various stages of the day."

Rising stars capitalise on the conditions at Swatch pro WQS 6*

DSC00460

Johanne, Rosy and Bianca enjoying the last sun, (of the week?)

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Swatch Girls Pro 6-Star Women's event started today with the girls battling the tough weather conditions that battered the contest site non-stop from first light this morning. Competition ran through two complete rounds until the incoming tide suddenly forced a holt to proceedings early in round 4 of this $US35.000 event.

Many of the world's best female surfers including 3-time and current ASP Women's World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) arrived early this morning with strong onshore winds, rain and small 2ft (0.5m) windblown waves. With the outlook for the entire week not looking too promising event officials were forced to run in not the kind of conditions they would have liked.

Despite the testing conditions all the surfers understood the situation and attacked their 25-minute heats with total commitment at trying to find and make the most of the better waves coming through the main sand bank at Les Bourdaines.

With the 2nd heat of round3 in the water, it was decided to put the contest on hold because of the deteriorating conditions. All contestants enjoyed superb lunch. Contest stopped today at 13 pm, all the girls went back to the Roxy House to relax.
