Last Saturday, the 5th of September 2009, Byron Kurt from California became the winner of the “First Edition” SUP 11-City Tour after paddling 220 kilometer, through 11 cities in 5 days. He did this with an impressive time: 26 hours 44 minutes and 19 seconds. Anne-Marie Reichman (competitor and event organizer) became the winner amongst the women in 34 hours 12 minutes and 5 seconds. She beat her time from last year by 4 hours.
The weather conditions where severe and the SUP athletes who came to Friesland from the USA, Hawaii, Spain, France, Belgium, England and the Netherlands were challenged! Besides moments of tale wind and sunshine, head winds in canals and over lakes up to 35 knots had to be conquered. Dropping temperatures and poring rain were endured. Despite the weather, the atmosphere amongst the 19 athletes, the motivation to paddle and battle was most impressive and made this “First Edition” very special.
As the 11 City Tour exists 100 years in 2009, it is a very unique, that the sport Stand Up Paddle has been added to the different ways in how this “monster marathon” can be performed.
Several participants and spectators have
even compared the SUP 11-City Tour with the original and authentic ice-skating
11-City Tour. The different sports within the 11-City Tour have several
elements in common: The way of “standing above the water”, experiencing the Frisian
environment and strongly being influenced by the weather have similarities. Also
the competition element was very exciting amongst the athletes and interesting
to follow by spectators on land and by GPS system “on line”.
The organization is very happy with the success of this “First Edition” of the SUP 11-City Tour 2009. Preparations for next year annual event have started. Well trained athletes will soon be able enter for next years event in 2010 through website www.supfryslan.nl
