Samantha Davies : Training continues.....

This week we did a little training run with BT and Safran. We set off on Wednesday morning with BT from Port La Foret, reaching towards Quiberon - a good speed test in 15 knots of wind. Then, at Quiberon we rolled genoas and waited for Safran. Then once the three boats were together we headed offshore in the building North Easterly breeze - under spinnaker. It was a fun leg sailing into the dusk! At night-fall we got "buzzed" by the 24F search and rescue Falcon from Lann-bihoue! We all had a chat and they did a couple of fly-bys!

Then we dropped spinnakers - a good exercise in 30 knots of wind - and headed upwind towards Ushant. It was a tough night with 25-30 knots of wind, but great training.

As dawn broke we turned around and "hooned" back towards Penmarch, blast reaching with BT only a few boat-lengths away from us! We struggle for boatspeed in these reaching conditions, and so we have our work cut-out for the next few weeks to try to make Artemis perform better. We are in the best place for that though, as the official squad training begins next week in Port La Foret!

So, now I hurt all over (Artemis is a lot harder to sail (physically) than Roxy) and Sidney and I are working on the debriefing from the 36 hours!

Better go - I'm off to Vannes today to visit the photo exhibitions!

Successful “First Edition” Stand Up Paddle (SUP) 11-City Tour 2009.

AM winner women

Last Saturday, the 5th of September 2009, Byron Kurt from California became the winner of the “First Edition” SUP 11-City Tour after paddling 220 kilometer, through 11 cities in 5 days. He did this with an impressive time: 26 hours 44 minutes and 19 seconds. Anne-Marie Reichman (competitor and event organizer) became the winner amongst the women in 34 hours 12 minutes and 5 seconds. She beat her time from last year by 4 hours.

The weather conditions where severe and the SUP athletes who came to Friesland from the USA, Hawaii, Spain, France, Belgium, England and the Netherlands were challenged! Besides moments of tale wind and sunshine, head winds in canals and over lakes up to 35 knots had to be conquered. Dropping temperatures and poring rain were endured. Despite the weather, the atmosphere amongst the 19 athletes, the motivation to paddle and battle was most impressive and made this “First Edition” very special.

As the 11 City Tour exists 100 years in 2009, it is a very unique, that the sport Stand Up Paddle has been added to the different ways in how this “monster marathon” can be performed.

Full action Several participants and spectators have even compared the SUP 11-City Tour with the original and authentic ice-skating 11-City Tour. The different sports within the 11-City Tour have several elements in common: The way of “standing above the water”, experiencing the Frisian environment and strongly being influenced by the weather have similarities. Also the competition element was very exciting amongst the athletes and interesting to follow by spectators on land and by GPS system “on line”.

The organization is very happy with the success of this “First Edition” of the SUP 11-City Tour 2009. Preparations for next year annual event have started. Well trained athletes will soon be able enter for next years event in 2010 through website www.supfryslan.nl

News from Samantha Davis

Whilst Sidney's off watch...

Whilst six of the IMOCA fleet are fighting out the Istanbul Europa Race, Sidney, I and the Artemis team have been moving base!

Artemis Ocean Racing is now happily tied up in the IMOCA 60 pool in Port La Foret, and Gringo, Gareth, Erwan and Zac are attacking the never-ending job-list and weight-loss plan!

Sidney and I set off from Ocean Village over a week ago, double-handed on AOR to deliver her down to France – our base for the next two months. Our delivery trip was a training run, and the qualifier for the Transat Jacques Vabre. We went over to Le Havre to use the first part of the trip as a practice for the start of the TJV - heading out of the channel and into the Bay of Biscay as we will do in November. We timed that part well – just as the remnants of Hurricane Bill came pounding up the Channel! So we literally “crash tested” AOR off huge waves upwind in 35 knot winds which was a good test for us and the boat! The last part of the trip was a little calmer and enabled us to test some downwind sails, notably spinnakers (our weak point being VMG running, we are working very hard to improve every aspect of performance here!)

We arrived (qualified!) in Port La Foret on Thursday evening, in time for a nice Pizza in La Yole! Then after a big clean and rinse on Friday, a well-earned weekend off!

This week we have done one sail to test out more changes, then the rest of the week is dedicated to JOBS!! Sidney and I have got some good physical training in (I got to test out my new road bike! Running this morning, weight training on Friday morning….) and Sidney is managing to do some more physio on his damaged leg.

More news and photos soon – sorry about the lack of news from on-board but we had a little hiccup with our sat-phone during our qualifier (it’s on the job-list now!!)

Byron Kurt and Anne Marie Reichman win 1st Stand Up Paddle 11-city tour !

Sans-titre-2 It was already clear after stage 1. In the first stage to Sloten Byron took a lead of several minutes. He did exactly the same in the following stages, so today he had an easy day. The followers had to do the job. The battle for place two was still open. Eric and Xavier where just seconds behind each other in favor of Xavier. Eric:”Byron took it easy today. He let us go and just followed. I was battling for second with Xavier. I tried several times but Xavier kept following. At the end we crossed the finish line as a group.”

Anne Marie Reichman battled for victory with the American Donna Badome- Raaphorst. Donna won the last stage but Anne Marie won the event. Her own event. Anne Marie: “ A few years ago I thought it would be a nice trip to do the 11 cities. Last year I tried it myself and though if I can do it, more can do it. And see, 18 competitors have paddled the 220 kilometer around Friesland. Next year I want more contenders and hopefully I can still compete with them!”

11-citytour on Stand Up Paddle: Strong southwest helps contenders to Dokkum

Sans-titre-1 Today the strong southwest wind blew the contenders through the northwestern part of Friesland. The wind found no obstacles on the stretched country. Byron Kurt, winner of all stages before made it a one-men show again. Even today he finished with a gap to number two. The following group was also exactly to same as the days before. Bart de Zwart, Eric Terrien and Xavier Masdevall Garcon worked well together and could keep the distance with Byron to a minimum. Also both ladies worked well together. Anne Marie Reichman, the organizer of the event, and Donna paddled together through the beautiful Frisian landscape. The Dutch skies completed the picture.

Beautiful Frisian landscape
Stephan van den Berg, first Olympic Champion Windsurfer, was special guest today. This ride reminded him at the old times on the old windsurfer. The boards look similar as the windsurfboard he used when he won his gold medal. But with the nowadays materials and production technique these boards are much lighter. Most paddler also use Carbon peddels.

Top 3 man - Stage 4: Franeker-Dokkum (54 km)
1. Byron Kurt (USA) 4 uur 46 minuten 30 seconden
2. Bart de Zwart (The Netherlands) 4 uur 54 minuten 24 seconden
3. Xavier Masdevall Garçon (Spain) 4 uur 54 minuten 25 seconden

Top 2 women - Stage 4: Franeker-Dokkum (54 km)
1. Anne Marie Reichmann (The Netherlands) 5 uur 41 minuten 45 seconden
2. Donna Badone- Raaphorst (USA) 5 uur 41 minuten 53 seconden

The start is at 10.00 at De Dam in Dokkum. In Hotel Eetcafe Restaurant ’t Posthus you can follow them live on screen. 11-citytour on Stand Up Paddle board

Winner of the first Stage, Byron Kurt, continued his supremacy in the second stage from Sloten to
Workum. He took the lead directly at the start. Followed by a small group of competitors. Eric Terrien,
Xavier Masdeval Garcon en Bart de Zwart followed the winner of the Catalina Challenge with a small
difference. It was immediately clear that Byron followed his tactics of yesterday and created a gap to
make sure he also finished this stage in first place. He finished one hour before schedule in Workum.
The battle for second place of today was a fierce one. Bart tells: “ We were following Byron the whole
day. We tried to help each other the whole time, but that is not so easy as it is with cycling”. On the
sporttrack on our site (link: Follow the tour live) it looked like Bart would finish second. But 10 meters
before the finish he felt during a turn. Bart: “ I had to steer a lot and loosed balance, these things can
happen.” Bart de Zwart lives on Maui but only after sailing the world with his family for three years he
felt in love with SUP-boarding. With success as he finished fourth today.

Sans-titre-1
Newcomers Jan Fokke Oosterhof and Kelvin Hilgeholt proved that this sport has no boundaries. It is easy to learn and everybody can compete. After Jan Fokke quit the race yesterday he decided to get back on it and competed also in the second stage. Yesterday was his first time he stepped on a SUPboard and today he was enjoying the scenery. Jan Fokke: “ Today I will only enjoy the race, no matter what.” He arrived in Workum as last contender but it didn’t matter to him. Our celebrity participant of today was modern Pentathlon athlete Kelvin Hilgeholt. This morning he made his first steps on a SUP
board. He fulfilled the whole stage and was smiling when he crossed the finish line. Kelvin: “ It was great to compete, with a few tips from the pros it went better and I could enjoy –Friesland is nice! This sport is so easy to enter and a good fatburner. I will certainly keep paddling. It fits well next to my other training for the pentathlon sports (swimming, horse riding, running, shooting and fencing).”

First SUP eleven cities tour officially started

In the morning of Tuesday 1 september the Councelar of Sports of Leeuwarden gave the startshot for the first SUP 11-cities tour. The international field of competitors listened to a speech of the chairman of the SUP fryslan organization and to Anne Marie Reichman. For her a dream came true with the start of the event. Last year she proved that the ultimate challenge is doable so this year she invited 25 other sportmans to join her on her trip around the eleven cities in the northern part of Holland.

Sans-titre-1

The paddlers started well, but with the tough southwest wind ahead the whole fleet got behind schedule. De fastest competitor Byron Kurt come into Sneek around twelve. There he had to take an official break of an half an hour for some food and drinks. Not unnecessary because you cannot eat that much when you’re paddling. After the break in Sneek the contender waited the greatest challenge near the finish in Sloten. They had to cross the lake of Sloten. That is tough with a full force wind ahead. Around 15.00 Byron Kurt was the first to arrive in Sloten. We had a little chat with Byron just after his massage. “ I was prepared for the worst but I enjoyed it. Everything went according plan and now I have gained some time on Xavier. It was a constant battle with the chop and the wind. This is by far the biggest challenge I ever did. And we have 4 more days left. But the support of the spectators keeps you going.”

Top 3: Etappe 1: Leeuwarden-Sloten
1. Byron Kurt (Amerika) 6 uur 54 minuten en 22 seconden
2. Xavier Masdevall Garçon (Spanje) 7 uur 3 minuten en 43 seconden
3. Eric Terrien (Frankrijk) 7 uur 4 minuten 29 seconden

Finishing last was Patrick Smits from Amsterdam, it took him 9 uur en 33 minuten en 55 seconden Jan Fokke Oosterhof, who stepped on the SUP for the first time quit. And Donna Badone Raaphorst her board got full with water and she had to get support from the support boats. Also Kevin Langeree was supported by the boats and could finish officially. Both will go on tomorrow but till now it is not certain what the jury will do with their time.

The competitors are awaiting a very tough challenge during the next five days. Normally SUP contest are one day events but now the contenders have to paddle for over 200 kilometers in five days. This is the ultimate challenge in SUP Boarding.
