Out here our world is tipped over at 30 degrees, and jumps around like a fairground ride. Not really so much fun as yesterday and a bit slower, but luckily in about 8 hours things should speed up! Living in this bumpy world is quite tricky! Eating is a high-risk manoeuvre, as you end up wearing half of what you prepared, re-decorating the boat with a quarter, and only the last quarter actually goes where originally intended. Going for a pee is equally amusing, but I will spare you from the description and leave that to the imagination - luckily we are all friends!
My body aches all over and I need more sleep. That is the same for everyone on board, as we are giving all we can to keep Aviva at 110% and break this record. Morale is high, despite the exhaustion, the team is getting more and more solid and we are motivated to work together to maximise our performance. That's all for now as I need to sleep for an hour!
It is funny to be living on board a different boat after so many miles travelled alone on my Roxy boat, but the change is nice and it is great to learn how to get the most out of Aviva in this "sprint" around the British Isles. It is also nice to be sailing as part of an efficient team, and Dee seems very happy to share her boat with us! We have been working very hard since the start, as predicted the wind has changed non-stop, so we have been full-on with helming, trimming and sailchanges. We have had the whole sail wardrobe up (and down) several times already. The longest rest any one of us has managed is 45 minutes and my muscles are starting to ache from the physical effort.
At the moment, Dee is at the helm, Alex trimming and Miranda is snatching a ten-minute cat-nap whilst I hog the chart table. The wind is light and we are behind the record pace, but this is expected. We are making the most of this temporary respite as the wind is forecast to build over the next 24h to gale force and we will be running fast towards the Shetlands. The crew share the same habit of tea-drinking and the flapjacks today have been a great treat. We are all trying to decide the clothing call for the next 24h which could be wet and uncomfortable: fleeces, drysuit tops and ski-masks... A big hot meal is planned in the next few hours, I have decided that mine will be spaghetti bolognaise (freeze-dried of course!) Despite the continuous hard work to keep boatspeed maximum, we have managed to have a great gossip amongst girlfriends. The subjects of conversation, of course, stay confidential to the crew! There has been a fair amount of singing (not all in tune) and laughing going on!!! A little last thought to our fifth crew-member - Isabelle Joschke - who could not come this week as she is racing Synergy (her Figaro) in the Quiberon Solo. We miss her and we really hope that she has had a good first day on the water.
More and more girls opt to replace the bikini with ski- and snowboard clothes this summer and head for the 5th Annual Quiksilver snowcamp at a glacier in Norway to play in the sun.The park is situated in spectacular surroundings on a glacier 2200 meters above sea level, based at the foot of Northern Europe’s highest mountain, Galdhopiggen.
Roxy teamrider and one of Norway’s leading snowboard talents, Silje Norendal (15) went to her first summer camp last year and found the combination of snow and summer temperatures extremely attractive; "The opportunity to go snowboarding in a T-shirt during the day and go swimming, skateboarding or rafting in the evening is truly unique", she said.Silje has been snowboarding since she was four and has dominated the Norwegian junior championships in both pipe and slopestyle in 2006, 07 & 08. She also won these disciplines in Laax, Switzerland at the European Open in 2007 & 08. However, you certainly don’t need to be a pro to enjoy yourself at the camp. The park is specifically designed to cater for riders of all ages and skill levels. The kicker tables range from two to 16 meters in length and are divided into three different kickerlines. There’s also a separate rail-combo-line which at any time consists of approximately 10 rails, but as the camp has more than 20 rails on hand this line will be constantly changing during the course of each camp in order to provide the riders with endless amounts of creative freedom.
All these elements combined make up a park-rider’s utopia and divided into groups all participants will receive highly qualified instruction from the internationally acclaimed professionals attending this year’s camps. Riders such as Ida Amble, Tom Wallisch and Adi Velic will make sure that all the campers return home with a big smile and a whole new bag of tricks. Silje is stoked; "The instructors and the park crew are all really cool and put in a solid effort to keep it interesting for us", she said. Although the majority of the participants at Quiksilver camps are boys there are a steadily increasing number of female rippers attending; "We had a great girl crew there last year and we’re hoping that even more girls will rock up this summer", Silje said.
If you’d like to join in on the fun, please contact info@quiksilvercamp.no for more information.

World renowned surfer and surf
instructor Shannon Ainslie was brutally attacked by two great white
sharks at the same time.Scandinavian girls and the majestic scenery of
the Norwegian west coast represents a far more peaceful experience than
the South African national is used to surfing Nahoon Reef, East London,
in South Africa. As a result of a freak incident Shannon became an
instant celebrity in the surfing world when news channels across the
globe aired jaw-dropping footage of two great white sharks attacking
him – simultaneously!
Today he's
best known for his surfing- and coaching abilities and he'll be pulling
out all the stops to maximise the progression of his students, both in
and out of the water. As an aid to guide these frothing females to the
next level he'll be utilising one-on-one video analysis after the
completion of each session.
Chief-instructor
at Roxy camp, Steve Harris from Australia is impressed by Shannon's
character; "After experiencing such a horrifying incident I think most
people would take up cricket or something, but Shannon is more
passionate about surfing today than ever before, and that energy
positively affects the people around him as well", said Steve.
The
last instructor at Roxy camp is the leading lady of Norwegian surfing,
Unn Haukenes. She has a wide array of wins in both Norwegian and
European events under her fashionable Roxy belt.
The
three of them together represents a coaching force to be reckoned with
and this year's camps are anticipated to be best yet since the
beginning in 2006. These camps also feature a great selection of extra
curricular activities such as sushi cooking classes, beach volleyball
as well as courses in both surfboard shaping and ding repairs.
International
surfers are encouraged to participate and Stavanger is easily
accessible from abroad. For further info, please contact Steve at

Saturday 30 May, Sunday 31 Maya and Monday 1st June I visited some surf beach clubs along the Dutch coast. Starboard Holland provided a lot of extra SUP boards for me to do some clinics here in. Starboards‘ Drive’ 10’5,long by 30 inch wide was a very popular learning board (and easy to carry) as well as the ‘Wopper’10’0, long by 34 inch wide (34 inch wide makes balancing easier!). Also ‘The Blend’ 11’ 2,long by 30 inch wide did a good job surfing the small waves. Hart Beach shop in Scheveningen has been a shop and beach hang out+ beach club (jump team)! where I have been hanging out for years! And it is the place I learned windsurfing in the waves. (special memories). It was a special experience for me to be able to teach some SUP clinics right there. My last day of clinics was in Zandvoort. At beach house ‘Skyline’ all the action took place; surf contests, SUP clinics and a bbq to close the day. For almost everyone who joined the SUP clinics, it was the first time to try SUP! Happy faces, big smiles and the eagerness to get this new fun challenging sport within their ocean repertoire were the reactions I saw and felt. I am glad the surf clubs I visited are renting the SUP boards. It makes it that much easier for people to get in touch with this amazing sport and to continue their SUP missions.
