Sally Fitzgibbons WINS Larger at the 2009 Australian Surfing Life Peer Poll

The 2009 ASL  Peer Poll Awards took place this last Saturday in Bells Beach Australia during the WCT.  These Poll Awards are the only surfing awards that the ASP Top 45 Men and 17 Women surfers themselves actually vote for; it is quite a unique opportunity to vote for your peers and have a say at "who is best".  It is also a HUGE honor to be awarded and recognized by your peers.

The ASP World Tour surfers are in FACT in the best position to judge and gauge the talent and skills of the juniour surfers rising through the ranks.  And this year they voted  Roxy's Sally Fitzgibbons as the winner for the female Snickers NExt Big Thing alongside Quiksilver's Julian WIlson for the Mens side.

“Julian and Sally have the world at their feet. ASL has been tracking, filming and writing about them for a long time now and it’s great to see they are getting consistent recognition by the surfers who are both their peers and heroes” said ASL editor Tim Fisher

As luck would have it...Sally was handed the award on stage by Layne Beachley, where earlier in the day, Sally had handed it to Layne out in the water; where Sally convincingly COMBO-ED the seven time world champion in Round 3 of the Bells WCT. Well, the moment wasn't lost on either of them on stage, with Layne commenting that the heat (her last ever at Bells) confirmed that her decision to retire from competitive surfing was the right choice..  CONGRATULATIONS SALLY!!!!!

SAND ART WITH JIM DENEVAN

Jim Check out this amazing sand art created Jim Denevan. He draws monumental, mandala-like, designs in damp sand right at the waters edge. They can take him days to create and then in a moment they are swept back into the sea. Simply amazing. This video is from a film by Patrick Trefz, starring Jim, released in the Summer of 2007, called "Thread". It shows Jim's process and how he makes his designs. Makes me want to start drawing in the sand...but my sand drawings never even came close to these! Recently, Jim moved from the ocean to the desert and created a land drawing in a dried up Navada Lake.

Roxy Grom Report - Ty and Kirby Team Up!

The Roxy snow team groms Ty Walker and Kirby Kelly have had one exciting season. Check out this report from their coach:

Snowboarding has brought together another dynamic pair of shredders.  Teaming up in mid March at Stowe Mountain Resort, Roxy groms Kirby Kelly and Ty Walker have been traveling and competing all over the country this spring.  If you were at the US OPEN in Stratton, Vermont, you may have noticed 12 year old Ty tearing up the big line in the slopestyle course.  Or maybe you happened to notice Kirby chilling in second place on the podium after the Junior Jam contest.  Their next adventure brought them west to the Roxy Chicken Jam at Mammoth Mountain.  Both girls put fourth respectable efforts in pipe and slope against the best women snowboarders in the world.  However the highlight for the girls that trip was getting to ride with other Roxy groms, Kirra Kotsenburg and Maddie Mastro (which if you're not keeping track that's two KK's and one MM).

After all the fun shredding and filming with the other girls, Ty and Kirby were off to Copper Mountain, Colorado for USASA Nationals.  Sunday April 5th was the first day of competition for the girls and it would start off at the slopestyle course.  Ty competing in the menehune (10-11 year old) division and Kirby in the Breaker (12-13 year old) division were at the top of the course trading speed advice and encouragement before their runs.  Both girls were determined to eliminate the term "girl jumps" from everyones vocabulary never once heading for anything but the big line of jumps right down the middle of the course. Kirby and Ty pushed the level for women's snowboarding right out of the gate, Kirby throwing deep straight air Indies and methods over the 35, 40, and 45 foot jumps her first run and Ty stomping an impressive first run of frontside 3 indy, backside 3 tail and a deep method over the 45 footer.  Holding it down through the rail section was no problem for the girls as their first runs would be all they would need to hold down the top podium spots for their respective age groups.

Kirby and Ty continue competing this week at the USASA Nationals in Copper.  Ty also competed in and won gold in her boardercross race on monday and has her slalom and giant slalom races coming up on wednesday and thursday.  Both girls are looking forward to friday for their halfpipe contest.  If you are in copper root on all the Roxy groms and ams as they compete to be the next champions in the worlds largest amateur contest.

Cultural experience in Sports and Music festival combined

UserscazenaveDesktopakh_DSC0390 In Dahla, south Morocco, the biggest Sports and Music festival was organized from 23rd of February until the 1st of March 2009. Many athletes (windsurfers, surfers, stand up paddlers and kiters) were invited from all around the world to participate together with Moroccan athletes. A down wind race, wave competitions as well as some clinics were scheduled for the week. A strong focus point for the week was as well the cultural exchange, especially for women!

In my invitation I only heard about the female focus of the event, and I decided it would be great to be part of an event like this. From Maui I flew to Amsterdam, and 2 days later I continued my mission. From Amsterdam via Madrid I landed in Casablanca, where a special airplane was waiting for all the athletes, press and musicians to fly us all into Dahla. Wow! Looking around me in the airplane I recognized some French windsurfers and photographers and… Nayra Alonso; fellow windsurf chick. I teamed up with her, caught up on our last trips and ‘giddy’ confessed to each other that we had NO IDEA what exactly to expect.UserscazenaveDesktopakh_DSC0514

A warm welcome with singing, gifts, tea, dancing, a traditional dinner and music overwhelmed us. Tents were built (I shared my tent with Nayra and Karin Jaggi) as well as toilets and showers in the middle of nowhere; ocean front! close to the Sahara dessert. Warm water was even provided by big water tanks; heated up all day by fires that were burning all day. We ‘sort of’ went back in time…

Every day of the trip, the ocean was providing us with some kind of conditions. I ended up using all my ‘toys’ that I brought: my 8’5” Tiki Stand Up Paddle board, my 6’4” quad surf board as well as my windsurfing gear! It feels so great and slightly spoiled almost to be able to adjust to any ocean condition possible and make the most of being an alround water woman.

Besides enjoying the water as much as possible, the ‘pro athlete girls’ did a few clinics for the local Moroccan girls. They were super stoked to get in touch with Stand Up Paddling as well as with windsurfing. I also did a few yoga sessions with them, which was all new, fun and challenging for them. (For me… a challenge to teach in French!) On this trip the Moroccan women had organized ‘get togethers’ to let us into their world and had us join their rituals, dances, dinners which was a blast and impressive to be part of.

On all fronts the trip was a great success! Good action in the waves, good people and a special cultural exchange between the locals and us.

Anne-Marie.

Roxy Champions celebrate end of season

Meanwhile, our very own free ride comp ripper Aline Bock has been winning some more podiums with a first place in the free ride comp in Slovakia at the weekend. Aline has had an amazing season and is now hoping for a bit more snow so she can have a few fun powder days all to herself.

Aline taking a winning line!

The Roxy riders who competed at the US Open and Chicken Jam doing so well in the last few weeks are finally getting the change to have a bit of a rest at home for Easter before trying for some last effort photos to end the season. I talked to kjersti yesterday and she was on the way to test drive a brand new Volvo, a nice easter present for her after her great wins this season!!

Well done Team Roxy, you have all had an amazing season!!!!!!!!!
