Roxy snow fun

I have been collecting news from the Roxy snow team over the last days and it struck me that collectively we have a lot of fun times in the snow. If you could gather together all the smiley energy that we make then I am sure you could harness it for a new ecologically friendly source!! Sometimes it is easy to see only the success of the team as far as results and photos go but another great success is the fun and happiness the girls give out to all the people they ride the mountains with. They really are a very positive bunch of people which I guess is part of their success!!

I hate to repeat myself about how successful this season has been but I have yet more great news from the team. Emma Bernard has just won the French Championships!! Well done Emma!! She has been going from strength to strength all season and is sure to make waves when she moves up from the junior age group next season.

And yet more great news from Aline, who I caught up with by email after her blistering result in the freeride world tour where she finished in 2nd spot. She is very pleased with how things went and in Verbier she took the biggest drop of all the girls this season and felt that she rode out of her skin. She said it has been really fun getting to know a new bunch of people and is looking forward to her second season on the free ride tour next year.

It’s time for Freeskiing in Laax !!!

For the 4th time in a row, the Orage European Freeski Open by Swatch took place from the 17th to 21st of march on Crap Sogn Gion mountain in Laax, Switzerland. The slopestyle and halfpipe competitions attracted more than 200 riders representing 20 nations and among them … our Roxy girls!Sans-titre-1

And action started with the SLOPESTYLE competition! After a day of training, qualifications took place on Wednesday for Mille Windfeldt and Lena Stoffel. Mille, unfortunately, had problems with getting enough speed on the kickers and didn’t qualify. Lena, on the other hand, got 3rd with a solid run: straight slide at the box then switch 180 to 360 to 540 on the 3 kickers.

On Friday, windy conditions led the organisers to cancel semi finals and go straight to finals … so Lena joined the 2 invited Roxy riders from Switzerland : Nina Michel and Eveline Bhend.

Eveline rocked it with a great run (switch 540 to 720 double crab to 540 on the last kicker) and finished in 5th place. Nina, only 14 years old, finished 6th and got a really good start with a solid rail trick, 270 on switch up 270 out and a safe kicker run too. Lena, who had a good 1st run, was a little sick these days. She tried her best but couldn’t avoid crashing in both runs and ended up 11th.
Sans-titre-1
On Saturday, the HALFPIPE event took place in perfect sunny conditions. All finalists displayed impressive tricks. Our bronze medallist from last Winter Xgames Jess Cumming was on the list. She pushed hard to get the speed and the height in that pipe and got 6th place, despite a dislocated shoulder after a fall on her 1st run!

Our Roxy girls had a great time there and are for sure looking forward to next year’s event !!!

ROXY SNOW TEAM WINS BIG AT US OPEN !!!

Torah Bright Claims Third US Open Halfpipe Title, Kjersti Buaas Takes Top Honors in Both the Quarterpipe and Slopestyle Events

 Torah Bright - 2009 US OPEN[1]

Huntington Beach, CA – March 23, 2009 --- Roxy is pleased to congratulate snow team riders, Torah Bright and Kjersti Buaas, on their amazing performances in Stratton, VT this weekend, claiming gold in the Women’s Halfpipe, Quarterpipe and Slopestyle events at the US Open Snowboarding Championships.  Torah Bright earned a coveted spot in the US Open history books tying Kelly Clark for the most women’s Halfpipe titles, with her third gold in the event (2006, 2008, 2009).  She also won the Amp Energy Best Trick award for her stylish switch backside 720, during the Halfpipe competition.  Roxy teammate Kjersti Buaas won gold in both the Quarterpipe and Slopestyle competitions and moved into seventh place in the TTR rankings, giving her a strong chance at the 2008/2009 World Title.  Buaas also earned a bonus for her 16’ method air in the Quarterpipe, taking the Amp Energy Highest Air award. Roxy European team rider Lisa Wilk placed second in the Women’s Quarterpipe event.

Torah Bright came out charging in the Halfpipe competition on Saturday.  Trailing Kelly Clark on her final run, Torah stole the show when she dropped in switch, starting off with Cab 720 indy, followed by a crippler, backside 360 indy, switch backside 720 ending with a backside 540.  Not only were her 96 points too many for

Clark

to overcome, but the run also earned her the Amp Energy Best Trick award and a $3,000 bonus for her switch backside 720.  This was Torah’s third US Open Halfpipe title, and second consecutive win at the event.  With gold at X Games, the final Dew Tour stop and the US Open, Torah looks unstoppable moving into the final event of the season, next weekend’s Roxy Chicken Jam at

Mammoth Mountain

,

CA

.

IMG_0641 Kjersti Buaas kicked things off on Friday night, winning the event’s first title for the women in the Quarterpipe competition, impressing the judges with her big backside airs, air to fakies and going for broke with different grabs.  She also earned a $3,000 bonus for her 16’ air taking home the Amp Energy Highest Air award.  On Sunday afternoon, it was Buaas again taking the top spot on the US Open podium for the second time this weekend, with a run that included a nosepress on the box, 50/50 to frontside 180, Cab 540 indy, backside 360 indy, frontside 360 stalefish ending with a frontside 720 mute.  Her impressive wins over the weekend moved her into seventh place in the TTR World Tour rankings, with a strong chance of claiming the world title at next weekend’s Roxy Chicken Jam.  Volvo also recognized Buaas for her impressive weekend, naming her the Volvo Most Valuable Rider for the weekend.

With the final stop of the 2008/2009 TTR Women’s World Tour, the Roxy Chicken Jam, less than a week away, all eyes are on Roxy’s snow team riders Torah Bright and Kjersti Buaas.  The Fifth Annual Roxy Chicken Jam at Mammoth Mountain, CA is scheduled to kick off Friday, March 27, 2009 and will crown the 2008/2009 TTR Women’s World Champion, in addition to offering a preview of what to expect at next year’s Olympics, with top snowboarders including Torah Bright, Kjersti Buaas, Kelly Clark and Jamie Anderson scheduled to compete at the event.  For more information about Roxy’s snow team and the upcoming Roxy Chicken Jam go to www.roxy.com

Another great week!!

Lisa and Kjersti in comp mode

Lisakjerti

As the season gallops to an end the roxy snow team girls are riding strong on the top of the TTR ranking list having notched up yet more podium places over the last week or so. The season just seems to get better and better for the Roxy snow team with Kjersti starting of the latest run of great results with a win in the FIS half pipe World Cup in Spain last week, putting her in a very secure position for an Olympic spot next season and showing he rest of the field that no matter how sketchy the pipe is she can still throw it big and clean. She took this spirit on to the US Open where she defended her strongly contested slopestyle title to win back to back firsts at the Open in the slopestyle event. Combined with her 4th place in the halfpipe, this meant she won another Volvo to match the one she won at the European Open. Close on her heels for the Volvo were Lisa Wiik and Torah Bright both showing that they are great all rounders and certainly no one event ponies. Torah won the pipe and was 4th in the slopestyle while Lisa was 9th in the pipe and just missed the qualification for finals in the slopestyle However it is Lisa Wiik who claimed the second place in the Burton Open standings just behind Jamie Anderson showing just how successful her season has been. And it is not over yet as she is currently in second place in the TTR standings going in to the last event of the season, the Roxy Chicken Jam in Mammoth California next week. It is going to be an exciting week for the Roxy team as Torah, Kjersti and Lisa can all do very well in the Chicken Jam and in the overall TR standings. I am on the edge of my seat with anticipation. GO GIRLS!!!!

Away from the slopstyle and halfpipe comps, Emily Aubry has been showing just how good her riding skills are by winning the overall FIS Europa Cup boarder X tour. We may well see Emily at the Olympics next season in the Boarder X event. Mille Windfelt and Eveline Bhend from the roxy ski team having been joining in the run of great results as well with Eveline taking second place in the big air at the Nippon Open and Mille also doing really well with her comeback to competition with a 7th in the half pipe and a 4th in the big air at the Nippon Open.

Mille is on the up again

On the Freeride World Tour, our very own free ride rookie Aline Bock has finished the season in a well earned second place in the World freeride ranking after the last two events in Tignes and Verbier. Aline has made a great breakthrough in to the world of freeride comps this season and is sure to go from strength to strength next season. Well done Aline!!

Powder for the Roxy crew

IMG_2765

The rest of the Roxy team who are working hard away from the competition scene are also having an epic time this season. Andrea Binning has been making the most of great conditions in Chamonix while Margot, Tania, Suray,  Lena and myself are all getting some great picture and filming snowy opportunities around Europe. I am currently looking forward to the usual late March snowfall to get one last run at the powder in Chamonix. It really has been a great snow year so far so I am sure I will not be let down.

Snapshot Diary From Tahiti

Tahiti2

For the past three years we have been traveling to Tahiti for our spring photoshoot. Half way between Australia and South America, it is made up of 118 little islands nestled in the South Pacific Ocean. Roxy goes there for about a week and takes the pictures that you see online and in ads.

Going to Tahiti is always such a magical experience. We wanted to remember it with a little snapshot diary. Take a look.

How awesome would spring break be on the island of Tahiti? The Official Tahiti Tourisme website has everything you need to plan your trip. It is so beautiful there.
